I was tempted to call Ruby Sunday a Wish.com Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but that's really not fair.
- Very much a Doctor-lite episode, with Ncuti Gatwa only in two scenes and Varada Sethu in precisely one.
- Perhaps we could have seen a poster with the year on at the same time the Doctor asked the young Conrad. Also, does the TARDIS not have the ability to tell when it is this week? Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
- Why is Ruby Sunday, a woman who has signed the Official Secrets Act in all likelihood, allowed to discuss UNIT on a podcast? Where the host has clearly not been vetted?
- Ruby's grandma is what we used to call a "dirty old woman".
- Did Millie Gibson have a sore throat during the filming of this?
- Ah, Think Tank! Wonder if they're the same lot behind the nuclear blackmail in "Robot" - which was 50 years ago now - or just an homage.
- Also, Tiffany Wells is back. Seems to have fallen on hard times though.
- How to show someone is evil in Doctor Who, have them mock a woman in a wheelchair.
- Kate Stewart can be really ruthless when you upset her. She could probably clean up at a poker tournament.
- Some great music from Murray Gold here, just noticeable enough.
- Mrs Flood has a lot of jobs, hasn't she?
Conclusion
After a slow start, the story really picks up a gear once the big twist drops and gets a lot better for it. Even if there is a fairly big plot hole here.
8/10
