In space, no-one can hear Dora scream in Spanish (Review: 'Alien: Romulus')

It's very difficult to cover this movie without spoilers, so I'm going to have to insert a jump break here.

Anyway, my screening was pretty much full, although a small screen; the last time I've had that happen was for Black Panther.

It also had the air conditioning at full blast, which very much helped matters in terms of atmosphere.

  • This is a movie that very much homages the original Alien film from the get-go, including the same font on the credits sequence. It is also advisable to watch that one first before going in - and then realise that key parts of that story will read very different. TV Tropes is now having to spoiler tag their entry on a 45-year-old movie.
  • Like the fact that "Big Chap", the Xenomorph from the first movie, actually survived and was picked up by Weyland-Yutani, the most evil megacorporation in all fiction.
  • The "cassette futurism" of the first film is also very much present.
  • Cailee Spaeny has just written the first line of her obituary as Rain Carradine. She's going to be getting convention invites for the rest of her days off this role alone. Great performance - you do think she might not make it.
  • David Jonsson as Andy does a great job in what is basically a dual role. I think there's a possibility of some serious award nominations coming his way for this.
  • And speaking of awards, I can see this one getting a bunch of Oscar nominations just for the effects.
  • Was not expecting to see the "return" of Ian Holm, although the CGI used for him was the weakest part of the movie.
  • Poor Kay. Isabela Merced doesn't do a lot except look terrified, but she does it so well. Also, that "birth" scene is one of the most horrific scenes I've seen in a movie full stop.
  • There are also some other pretty nasty kills in this space slasher movie.
  • I've played Alien: Isolation and so much of this movie looked very familiar to me. It is a very hard game, I will tell you.
Conclusion

A brilliant movie and one of the best of the franchise.

9/10
