Don't mind me, I'm just here for David Tennant...
I don't really watch anything like the level of gameshows I used to. I am old enough to have watched The Crystal Maze on first transmission and one of my oldest TV memories is a Paul Daniels vehicle called Every Second Counts.
But the modern day stuff really tends to pass me by. Even The Traitors.
However, when I saw that David Tennant, arguably the best Doctor of them all, was doing a game show for ITV, I decided to watch it. For one thing, it would give me another "Don't Mind Me" post.
Based on a South Korean show called The Genius that ran between 2013 and 2015, eleven players take part in various challenges that test their social and reasoning skills... with the opportunity for Traitors-style backstabbing.
The set design looks great and the games are pretty interesting - a challenge even for me, who often gets told he should go on a quiz show. The first episode also has an elimination challenge where you are tempted to scream at the TV as someone starts acting like a complete idiot, complete with giggling.
But it rather wastes a key asset. David Tennant as "The Creator" does a lot of fun pieces to camera complete... but all he really does is appear in stuff like that. He's not directly interacting with the contestants it seems.
Also, do we get any more physical challenges here, rather than glorified card games?
At least the Scottish dealer lady's poker face is fun to watch.
I'll stick around with this, but I somehow doubt I'd have gone near it if Tennant wasn't involved.
Conclusion
Based on IMDB and the viewing figures, I suspect this will be the sole Genius Game here...
6/10
